Parting Words for America (Part 1)

I've been in the States for almost 7 months, and I feel that it's an appropriate juncture to express my honest and personal opinion about the American culture, behavioural set, and way of life. Before coming here, I must admit that my perception of people here were more vocal and liberal. Which they were of course...apart from a whole lot of other things.

Folks who know me well enough understand that I'm vehemently vocal about my thoughts. And I'm not particularly shy about denoucing the American Culture which the Americans bear.

A few situations compelled me to find them obnoxious. FIrstly, the London Terror Bombings. I witnessed the grim footage of a makeshift area where people placed flowers and cards as a mark of respect / grievance for those who were affected in the bombings, and within these was a placard that clearly displayed "America's #1"...have they no shame at all? People are dying in London and at the scene they have the audicity to display such insensitive and senseless messages?

Another issue was during a live 1 hour interview between an MSNBC reporter and an Islamic Scholar after the London attacks. The reporter asked the scholar what he felt about the apathy from London muslims who were asked awhether Osama was the mastermind behind the 911 attacks and they were "dodgeful animals", and that these facts were clear...Clearly, the reporter was pressing the Muslims that these facts were "clear" and that every question he asked, he did not give them a chance to fully express their opinion, contunially cutting them off and insisting that the facts were clear, etc etc. This is one aspect of Americans that I absolutely cannot tolerate. They're ethnocentric. That the world owes the Americans their lives and that they are always RIGHT...the American Way is THE way. What they have done is to enrage a lot of people...even neutral parties like me are becoming increasingly against their cultural subversion.

Why is it that they cannot mind their own problems first instead of nosing around? They ask the world to stand up and liberate themselves, to either be with them or against them. They ask Muslims to liberate themselves? From what? They preach human rights etc etc...denying aid to the most needy nations for the slightest "infringements" of human rights...well, so much for democracy with freedom to arm themselves etc etc...look at the number of murders in the state capital? it's among the highest in North America. Freedom has it's price...and they are paying dearly for it. I feel absolutely sorry for the homeless and poor here, they're just around the corners of the white house...can you believe it? The world's superpower has Prostitutes and begggars and homeless people around the white house? Unimaginable? But that's what's happening. Every single day the news channels are filled with interviews / footages of kidnappings, missing people, murders, trials...domestic violence etc....the list is endless. Wouldn't the amount of money spent in the war in Iraq be better channelled to funds for their social system, to reduce 3rd world debt, and to aid better social causes?

The facade of Freedom has it's price...and America is paying its dues with it's own social problems. It preaches it so vehemently, yet what does total freedom bring? Is it worth persuing....The Americans are not always right...but it's their belief that they are...
