05/03/2005 Sat – Set Off
I woke up really excited, all geared up for the trip and raring to go. Met Hanwei, Jiwon and Jessica at the IFH for Taka to drive us to the airport so that we could get our rental vehicles.
It was intended that Han and JW were to drive one vehicle, while Jess & me take the other, but Jess was below 21, so she was not allowed…that spelled trouble for the 3 drivers….we had more than 3000 miles to cover...the apprehension started to sink in...oh boy…
Anyway, my vehicle was a silver Ford Impala and Hanwei’s was a black Buick Regal. Now bearing in mind that we were used to doing right hand drives, that absolutely compounded the apprehension….but what the heck. We found our way back to Beaver hall where everyone was supposed to wait, and we assembled our stuff. Nang just woke up, and was having a little excursion of sorts to the carpark as he had problems finding his was there. Fai and the IFH gang were late too.
Everyone was in good spirits and we were all choosing which cars were to have which passengers. The funniest this was this supposed animosity by Sharon against Han as he kept pestering her...she was so so freaked out…Hannah resolved everything by making a bag with names so that the drivers could draw lots of their passengers.
Anyway, we set off around 11, a little later than expected with Taka as the lead vehicle. Mildred, Hannah, Jessica were in my vehicle. We stopped by Sheetz to top up our petrol and guess what, we realized that the accommodations map was missing, as such we drove back to state college to pick it up again.
The day’s drive was to reach Petersburg, Virginia in the evening. But all thanks to the unnerving Washington D.C. traffic, we were held back for a while. My car was perpetually filled with great music, all thanks to Mil, Hannah and Jess’s CDs. We actually managed to stop by Washington Chinatown for Dim Sum dinner. A pretty decent place with average prices…I recalled ordering various dim sums and curry chicken rice.
After this short refuelling stop we went down to Petersburg and had to do some night driving, which I was not really comfortable with for safety reasons. But we reached the place safely anyway. The guys were checked into separate rooms from the girls and not surprisingly, the guys made a beer run.
